Rashaida

The Rashaida live in Eritrea and Sudan and they originate from Saudi Arabia about 150 years ago.

As Sunni Muslims they cultivate an Islamic culture which is expressed in dresses and adornment. The whole body is covered, and women and girls embroider their clothes densely with silver beads. Woven glass beads and silver jewellery complete their adornment.

The photos I took between 1994 and 1997.
