MASTERING DISASTER – NATURE AND FICTION

Results of the Artist Residency in South Africa, NIROX Art Foundation Jewellery and photography by Martina Dempf

the dawn of humanity, jewellery has had strong symbolic meaning. Amulets are said to protect people from the forces of nature, while talismans are believed to have a positive influence on fate. In NIROX Sculpture Park and its wild surroundings, the artist immerses herself in elements of nature and explores the significance of the collected materials for a contemporary understanding of nature and its metaphysical power. The exhibition shows the resulting jewellery and objects. These objects are accompanied by a series of photographs of spiritual spheres, from journeys over the last two decades.

NIROX Artist Residency
Kügersdorp South Africa
Exhibition at VILLA LEGODI
At NIROX, Martina collects elements from the natural environment of the park, with their intrinsic natural power. By transforming wood, roots, seeds etc. in an experimental artistic way, and in combination with multiple materials like metal, glass, stone or hair, they undergo a metamorphosis into art pieces with a new and expanded connotation. The jewellery and objects created address the cultural relationship of man and nature and the desire for metaphysical protection of the human body and its environment.
The residency takes place in collaboration with the University of Johannesburg, Faculty of Art, Design & Architecture (UJ FADA), Jewellery Department and FADA Gallery.
